Ratio
A ratio a:b compares two quantities. Simplify ratios by dividing both parts by the common factor (like simplifying fractions). Ratios can be scaled up or down (e.g. 2:3 is equivalent to 4:6).
You can express a ratio as fractions of a whole: e.g. in ratio 2:3, the first part is \(\dfrac{2}{5}\) of the total and the second part is \(\dfrac{3}{5}\) of the total.
Example
Example: Simplify the ratio 8:12. Divide both by 4 ⇒ 2:3.
Practice
Simplify the ratio 6:15.
